Some people call the village of Awra Amba, in Ethiopia, a utopia.
It's founded on progressive egalitarian principles which radically set it apart from traditional society in the area. Men and women have equal rights, perform the same jobs and decisions are made democratically with people of any age or gender allowed to contribute to debates. The village turns down aid and invests in it's own education and industries- weaving, milling and recently tourism. It's a big success story and has become famous throughout Ethiopia, where other communities are starting up and modelling themselves on Awra Amba.
